i/we spend our summer holidays on the south coast of france. i try my best with french and, with my wifes far better vocabulary manage to get by. a friend of mine recently told us of a time when, visiting a town in france his wife asked him tho get a map of the town from the hotel clerk. he approached the desk and stated, in his very best pidgeon french.... je suis une town carte!
the clerk raised a wary eyebrow and very rapidly retreated to the safety of her office!
cj - it's marvelous the things that can be mis-said - and the reactions can vary wildly! thanks for this one. i need to get to France someday, meanwhile spluttering about here...

that's a good sign (in both senses) :)
floots - yes, he was very pleased with it - the French version doesn't work so well here, I'm sure they would use something much briefer...
